Barsky was born in the Bronx in New York City. He moved to Long Island and then New Jersey. In 1973, he returned to New York City, this time living in Long Island. He went to the Walden School for high school.〔 Barsky pursued his undergraduate studies at Oberlin College and a graduate degree in journalism at Columbia Journalism School.〔
